If you’re like most people, thinking about your big new goal for the upcoming year fills you with excitement. And if you’re like most people, that excitement dwindles by February when thoughts of your New Year’s Resolution are long-gone fantasies.
Actions are often the primary focus when goals are set, but thoughts and beliefs about success are just as (or more) important. Weak beliefs are cause for losing that New Year’s Resolution steam.
If you want to show up for yourself in 2024 like never before, here are some simple yet powerful mindset practices to adopt.
1: Talk to Yourself Like an Ally
It’s easy to desire something, but it’s just as easy to forget about that desire when we talk to ourselves like an enemy would. If you’ve never lost a lot of weight before and you want to lose 50 pounds in 2024, you have to talk to yourself like a cheerleader instead of like a player on the opposite team.
Goals start with inspiration, and your thoughts will make or break that inspiration. “I’ll try, but I’m not sure I can lose 50 pounds. That’s so much weight,” creates different results than, “I’m willing to do what it takes to lose 50 pounds. Weight loss is the name of my game this year!” Thoughts build upon one another.
Once you become aware of your thoughts throughout the day, you can train yourself to change thoughts that once stopped you into thoughts that make you unstoppable.
2: Connect With Your Future Self
There’s a version of you who has everything you want: the money, the relationship, the body, the promotion, etc. You might not feel connected with that version of you right now, but your desire alone lets you know that version exists.
Take five minutes a day to picture the version of you who already completed your New Year’s Resolution. This can be done as you fall asleep, intentionally when you wake up, or any chance you have.
Get specific. How does this version walk into a room full of people? What does this version love to wear? What’s this version’s favorite breakfast? How does this version talk to him/herself? What kind of friends does this version keep?
Big doors swing on small hinges. Changing your nail color, drinking out of a new stainless steel water bottle, or posting an inspirational sticky note on your bathroom mirror all have power to influence how you carry yourself throughout the day.
When you get specific with your habits, appearance, and mindset, the current version of you quickly aligns to the future version you desire to be.
3: Want It vs. Know It’s Yours
Do you want to lose 50 pounds in 2024, or do you know you’re going to lose 50 pounds in 2024?
When you want something, your plans for having that thing can get thrown off track more easily and permanently than when you know that what you want is yours.
When you know your goal is certain, obstacles, points of low motivation, and negative thought patterns about your ability to achieve the goal will be minor hiccups instead of total abandonment.
Turn your want into knowing, and watch how much more confident you feel about completing your goal. Confident thoughts lead to necessary action.
Don’t worry when things take more time than you hoped they would. Sometimes we have lessons we need to learn that make the journey longer than anticipated. Persistence and patience are key.
Continuously visualize greatness for yourself, and lead yourself with power and determination. Always be your biggest fan and supporter.
What you want is already yours, so go and get it!
